Update (8th march 2010)

2010 GAMES

Sid Meier’s Civilization V
New entry in one of the greatest franchises gaming has ever seen.

Tropico 3: Absolute Power
First add-on to a city builder which scored 8.4 at IGN

Virtual Villagers 4: The Tree of Life
To say that Virtual Villagers 4: The Tree of Life is just more of the same is both accurate and an over simplification. To be sure, returning players will instantly recognize its design, interface, and play style (and lament deficiencies shared by its predecessors—we still can’t scroll out to view the entire village, alas). But the simple truth is that this game, like its forerunners, is an undeniably fun and long-lasting play bursting with clever new environmental conundrums. Put more simply, if there’s something wrong with Virtual Villagers’ formula, then I don’t want Last Day of Work to make it right.9.0 from Gamezebo

Nightfall Mysteries: Curse of the Opera
Nightfall Mysteries: Curse of the Opera has a dark sense of humor, wonderful hand-drawn art, mind-bending puzzles, and good solid object hunts. It’s not the longest or most difficult HOG you’re ever going to encounter, but its polished presentation and amusing characters more than make up for its shortcoming8.0 from Gamezebo

The Clumsys 2: Butterfly Effect
Overall, however, these are minor quibbles that shouldn’t distract from the fact that The Clumsys 2 is a very good game. There’s even a slight educational benefit to be found, as each level includes small tidbits of information about where and when each invention was made, and with 30 of the world’s most famous inventions waiting to be completed, it’s not something most people are likely to finish up very quickly8.0 from Gamezebo

Big City Adventure: Vancouver
Its art is pleasant and its searches are solid, but what Big City Adventure: Vancouver really has going for it is sheer size. Even if you’re a speed demon, it’s going to take you quite a while to burn through all 69 levels, especially if you stop to read the informative post cards that pop up when you’ve finished a scene. It’s not going to blow you away with its story (it doesn’t really have one), or its gameplay (you’ve done all of this before), but if you’re in the mood for a HOG, or the Winter Olympics, or both, a trip to Vancouver would be time well spent.8.0 from Gamezebo

Mole Control
Minor complaints aside, Mole Control takes an old formula and makes it new again. The style, originality and simple fun were absolutely top notch. The presentation made this feel like a strong PopCap release, but this isn’t even a PopCap game! No matter how tired you think you are of Minesweeper, Mole Control will make you fall in love with its gameplay all over again.8.0 from Gamezebo

Settlement: Colossus
While the end result of Settlement: Colossus isn’t quite as interesting as the core idea it presents, the game is still solid and enjoyable. The gameplay, while a bit on the repetitive side, is unique and refreshing and the visuals are absolutely wonderful. The game also provides a very lengthy adventure that is sure to keep would-be settlers busy for quite some time.8.0 from IGN

Empress of the Deep: The Darkest Secret
mpress of the Deep: The Darkest Secret is one of the most entertaining hidden object games I’ve played in a long time. With a fantastic setting, engaging environments, fun puzzles and a dark twist, it’s a great choice for gamers looking for a relaxed experience with a bit of an edge to it.8.0 from Gamezebo

The Tarot’s Misfortune
These are minor quibbles about what is otherwise a beautiful and refreshingly different HOG. The mechanic of having to peek around objects in the foreground should be more than enough to attract fans of the genre, but the gorgeous visuals are the icing on the cake8.0 from Gamezebo

Black Sails
Pirate themed adventure game from Deck 13, makers of Ankh series and Jack Keane.

Jolly Rover
“First full-length commercial adventure from Brawsome, the small indie studio whose previous credits include the freeware title Just Another Point n Click Adventure, plus work on Emerald City Confidential and Avenue Flo.”

Boryokudan Rue
SF adventure game that’s one of the student prize winners at the 2010 Independent Games Festival

Perpetuum Online
EVE Online-inspired mech sim MMO.

Indie heist game that’s nominated for 2010 IGFSeumas McNally Grand Prize, developed by Pocketwatch games, makers of Wildlife Tycoon(IGF finalist) and Venture Arctic (Gametunnel’s sim game of the year)

Borderlands: The Secret Armory of General Knoxx
If you enjoyed Borderlands and still wanted more, then definitely download The Secret Armory of General Knoxx. The main story line is still a blast even if you go it alone and some of the side quests will challenge the most hardened team of Boarderlands veterans. This is by far the best of the three add-ons for the core game, and the most fun I had since I completed the main game last year.8.8 from IGN

Dragon Age: Origins – Return to Ostagar
Return to Ostagar doesn’t add anything revolutionary to the Dragon Age experience. You’ll know exactly what you’re in for from the moment you load it up. With that said, it’s every bit as good as the content that came with the original game, and it gives the Warden a chance to tie up one of the campaign’s loose ends. Throw in a fair bit of impressive loot, some of which will actually stay useful through the end of the main story, and there’s no reason to avoid returning to Ostagar.8.5 from IGN

Major League Baseball 2K10
he PC version doesn’t try to fix or correct any of the gameplay failings that I found in the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, but its increased technical proficiency makes it the version to buy this year. You get the same exact functionality and feature set that’s present in other versions, but for $30 less and you get to enjoy a much nicer visual presentation if your computer has the muscle. This year’s MLB 2K10 is far from perfect, but the PC version – for a change when it comes to sports games – is the best version currently on the market.7.3 from IGN

Test Drive Unlimited 2

Fallout: New Vegas

Project Reality 0.9 for Battlefield 2
Massive update (new factions, maps, weapons, mods, tweaks etc) to one of best tactical mods around.

Jumper and the City for Crysis
A mix of Mirror’s Edge and Prototype.

Dark Blood for Left 4 Dead
“The survivors drifted at sea and a tankership seems deserted. But it’s filled with infected. The survivors must try to restart the tankership motor, if they want to join the oil plateform where a helicopter was heading.”

DeadCity II for Left 4 Dead 2
“Kill plenty of zombies starting in RiverSide (city) then battling through the Back Alleys, over a Draw Bridge, at a Water Plant and during the escape at the Subway Station.”

Freezer Burn for Left 4 Dead 2
6 maps long campaign set in frozen skyscrapper.

Stalker CS Reloaded for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky
Megamod that tweaks gameplay, balance and graphics of original game, turning it into something much more polished and fun to play.

Wanderers Edition for Fallout 3
“A major overhaul mod for Fallout 3 that changes underlying game mechanics and adds new features to the game. The aim of the mod is to improving the challenge, sense of immersion, depth of gameplay, and range of options compared the vanilla game. Generally, you’ll find the wasteland to be a more dynamic but far less forgiving place.”

Porsche Supercup for GTR Evolution

WTCC 2009 for RACE On
This mod adds all cars from the most recent season of the World Touring Car Championship.

Attack of the Paper Zombies
Top down arena shooter,

Balloon in a Wasteland
Defense centered action game.

Cactus Block
You play as an unnamed blue character who has to find his or her way home on a snowy winter day. Some cliffs might seem to high to climb at first, but you can place a random tile on screen as a platform to stand on or jump off. The problem with this ability is that there’s an equal chance of getting a cactus instead of a brown block, which hurts the player should they come in contact with the prickly plant. – Indiegames

Minimalistic exploration platformer.

Dinosaurs Didn’t Have Keyboards, But If They Did, They Would Break
A short arcade game created by Sophie Houlden in under forty-eight hours for a mini-Ludum Dare competition. In it, you have to tap the number keys as fast as you can to help the dinosaur leap over lava pits and reach the finish line in the quickest time possible. – Indiegames

Update (31st january 2010)

Finally done. New pages for 2010 mods and freeware games were added. Sorry for the delay

2010 GAMES

Fix-it-Up 2: World Tour
In the end Fix-it-up: World Tour definitely fulfills every expectation, though without being as innovative as the first game. The concept still works great and ensures the game’s rank being one of the few unique time management games out there. Enjoy a trip all over the world with an interesting story, gorgeous graphics, funny details and be prepared to invest at least six hours to do so.8.0 from Gamezebo

Vacation Mogul
Vacation Mogul will entertain players of all levels and more than satisfy real estate game fans. Unlike many Build-a-lot copycats, Vacation Mogul succeeds in standing on its own two feet with its good pace, variety, colorful graphics and challenge.8.0 from Gamezebo

Galcon Fusion
Sequel to a great indie game

Victoria 2
New grand strategy game from Paradox Interactive, know for games like Europa Universalis III (8.5 from IGN), Europa Universalis: Rome (8.7 from IGN) or Hearts of Iron III (8.5 from IGN)

Future Wars
Turn based wargame from Radon Labs, makers of Drakensang (7.6 from IGN).

Majesty 2: Kingmaker
First add-on a managment game that got 7.5 from IGN.

Wizard Land
Given that there are about 90 levels, and each level is as dynamic as the last, Wizard Land offers hours of amazing, original puzzle gameplay. Given how few stand-out puzzlers are out there, Wizard Land is definitely not to be missed.8.0 from Gamezebo

Mortimer Beckett and the Lost King
Mortimer Beckett and The Lost King is a touch too short to get full marks (expect about four hours of gameplay if you don’t rely too heavily on the game’s generous hint system), but nevertheless it’s an enjoyable and polished ride that makes most of the other recently-released hidden object/adventure games look embarrassingly amateurish by comparison. This is one well-crafted gem that you won’t want to miss out on.8.0 from Gamezebo

The Mirror Mysteries
. It’s a shame that it’s over so quickly, as its inventive style is a refreshing change of pace from the usual hunts. If you don’t mind the briefness of the encounter, though, this is a particularly enjoyable HOG. 8.0 from Gamezebo

Unique puzzle platformer that’s expanded and improved follow up to a great freeware game.

Max & the Magic Marker
Indie physics based 2D platform game.

A skirmish-level space RTS with full 3D freedom of movement in combat (like in Homeworld). The guy working on it previously made Gravity Bone, one of greatest freeware games of last couple years

Update (14th January 2010)

A small clarification: when it comes to mods and freeware games today’s update covers only 2009. I will be adding separate pages for 2010 versions of those categories later this week.

2009 GAMES

Lord of the Rings Online: Siege of Mirkwood
Lord of the Rings Online: Siege of Mirkwood may have a smaller land mass than its last expansion, The Mines of Moria, but it does not lack in playable content. Turbine has managed to create an immersive introduction to this expansion with excellent use of graphics, music and quests(…)Turbine has managed to create Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings in the context of an MMO and yet kept true to the lore (even if the Runekeeper class is a bit of a stretch). There will be years left in the life of this game as Turbine takes the story onward toward Rohan and beyond.9.0 from IGN

Everyday Genius: SquareLogic
When the only downside a game can present is that it will almost definitely never be completed due to the vast amount of content (again, over 20,000 boards!), you know you have a real winner. Everyday Genius: Square Logic is a phenomenal game, turning the basic premise of Sudoku on its ear. It adds so many variables and dimensions to the point that it’s not even fair to call it Sudoku anymore. Everyday Genius: Square Logic is a serious candidate for best casual game I’ve personally played all year. By all means, if you’re not convinced, download the demo. Sixty minutes will never pass by so quickly.9.0 from Gamezebo

Penny Dreadfuls: Sweeney Todd
Penny Dreadfuls: Sweeney Todd is an incredibly polished adventure with beautiful visuals, well done hidden object sequences, and fiendishly clever puzzles. Get this one without delay. The Demon Barber awaits!9.0 from Gamezebo

Where’s Waldo?: The Fantastic Journey
Where’s Waldo: The Fantastic Journey excels in its fun gameplay, story, graphics, voice talent and humor. While it’s no easy feat to follow all the amazing HOGs this books series inspired, Ludia has done a fine job at taking on the daunting challenge.8.0 from Gamezebo

The Dark Hills of Cherai
The Dark Hills of Cherai is a perfect balance of the familiar and the new, sure to enchant even those who feel burned out on hidden object games8.0 from Gamezebo

Mishap: An Accidental Haunting
Mishap is delightfully inventive, but not without its frustrations. Its instructions aren’t always as clear as they could be, which can be particularly frustrating during the final encounter with the main ghost. Moving from the hub of a region to the satellite rooms is simply a matter of finding the doors, but they’re not always immediately obvious and it’s too easy to miss the small green arrow that gets you back to the hub room. Still, these are minor complaints in what is otherwise an entertaining, amusing, and refreshingly different hidden object game.8.0 from Gamezebo

REO Speedwagon: Find Your Own Way Home
Find Your Own Way Home’s pros outweigh its cons. It’s long, has a nice variety of game styles, including some creative twists on familiar mini-games. Despite being an advertisement for REO Speedwagon, it’s not obnoxious about getting you to buy the CD or even watch a video. If you like REO Speedwagon, great, but if not, you can ignore that aspect of the game pretty easily.8.0 from Gamezebo

Mahjong Memoirs
Mahjong Memoirs is a terrific game. It’s not perfect-why, for example, is there no onscreen clock if time plays such an important role in endless mode?-but any issues you’ll encounter will be small and infrequent. It’s a surefire bet for folks who enjoy a good game of Chinese solitaire.8.0 from Gamezebo

The Otherside: Realm of Eons
You’ll find few other hidden object games where the protagonists experience the time loops and sympathetic magic plots one rarely encounters outside of Neil Gaiman novels. The game unfolds more than 18 levels, some with multiple locations, that take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes to clear. The Otherside: Realm of Eons may feel a little too short for skilled hidden object gamers and it has absolutely no replay value. It’s not really a game that deserves an A for effort. It’s still an interesting and enjoyable enough experience that it merits a good solid B, though.8.0 from Gamezebo

2010 GAMES

Retro indie platformer

Neptune’s Pride
4X game from ex Irrational Games Australia designers.

The Fall Trilogy: Chapter 1 – The Separation
New adventure game from Kheops (makers numerous quality games from this genre like Return to Mysterious Island or Dracula 3)

Sven Co-op Community Map Project for Half Life

Post Script for Half-Life 2
“An episodic narrative mod for Valve Software’s Half-Life 2: Episode 2. Explore the remains of a town destroyed by its own tragedy in a collection of short, interactive vignettes. Solve environmental puzzles and uncover the mystery of how, somewhere along the line, the whole world fell out of existence completely”

Nestlings for Half-Life 2
Lovecraft-themed horror adventure mod.

No More Industries for Left 4 Dead
The survivors need to get to an abandoned indsutry to escape from the hell.”

4 maps long campaign with levels like police station or tunnel system.

Blood Oil for Ghost Recon
Massive campaign set in Nigeria designed for both SP and MP modes

Call of Warhammer Total War for Medieval II: Total War

“Total Conversation , featuring a new and fully voiced singleplayer campaign – 100 years after “Star Trek: Nemesis” war gets unleashed in the Alpha Quadrant once again”

RSRBR 2010 for Richard Burns Rally

Cluster Lander
Physics based exploration game

Dracula Cha Cha

Duum Mashine
Arcade shooter with unique art style

Let’s Go Find El Dorado
Physics centric remake of Oregon Trail

Merry Gear Solid 2: Ghost of Christmas Past
Merry Gear Solid 2: Ghost of Christmas Past is a fan-made tribute to a popular series of stealth espionage games, created by a developer who has a clear understanding and respect for canon material. Many of the tools used on the field have been renamed and redesigned with the Christmas theme in mind, but the way these equipment are handled will feel very similar to their original counterparts.-Indiegames

Santa Fu

Update (18th December 2009)

2009 GAMES

Mystery Case Files: Dire Grove
Mystery Case Files: Dire Grove isn’t the huge leap forward that Return to Ravenhearst was in terms of depth and gameplay – in fact, those who have played Return to Ravenhearst will find that a lot about Dire Grove feels familiar. But a fresh new story, original puzzles, and the introduction of video shows that the developers aren’t interested in resting on their laurels just yet.9.0 from Gamezebo

Casebook: Episode III – Snake in the Grass
While the gameplay takes a step back from the previous episode, the storyline and filmic qualities have never been better, and Snake in the Grass will certainly please fans of the series and every adventurer in search of a gripping mystery. from Adventuregamers

Lost Realms: The Curse of Babylon
Lost Realms: The Curse of Babylon greatly improves on its predecessor, providing a beautiful, well-paced game with plenty of intriguing twists on the genre. If you’re not already familiar with the characters, you may find yourself a bit nonplussed by the plot, but don’t let that stop you from joining the adventure.8.0 from

Westward IV: All Aboard
Aside from a slow start and some minor design issues, Westward IV: All Aboard is a great strategy adventure that is a lot of fun, provided you can slog through the first hour or so of play. If you’re able to do this, you’re in for what is one of the most charming strategy games to come along in a while, and will find yourself madly in love with soon
9.0 from Gamezebo

Luxor Adventures
Overall, Luxor Adventures is one of the more polished, fun and challenging HOGs we’ve played over the past few months. The value proposition is also high given the fact you get multiple game types (and individual modes) in one package, too. Be sure to download the free trial to start saving the world…one click at a time.9.0 from

Delicious – Emily’s Holiday Season
The only thing which might be a tad disappointing about Delicious: Emily’s Holiday Season is that it is not as innovative as the previous game of the series. But on the other hand, why change a wonderful game just for the sake of change? The game is simply heaven for anyone who has a thing for time management games, and we definitely cannot wait for
the next part of this fun series. Get in the mood for the holidays and enjoy the remaining time with this entertaining game.
8.0 from Gamezebo

Amazing Adventures The Caribbean Secret
The Amazing Adventure games have all been excellent, and Caribbean Secret is no exception. From the music to the visuals, everything has been polished to perfection. The setting isn’t exactly hard on the eyes, either – if you’re going to go poking around the landscape, it may as well be the gorgeous landscape of tropical islands. And be ready to spend plenty of time there, because even without the unlockable game modes, Caribbean Secret is a large game. Amazing Adventures: The Caribbean Secret is the yardstick by which the hidden object genre should measure itself. It gets absolutely everything right. Treat yourself and play this game. 8.0 from Gamezebo

Hidden Magic
Truly, I haven’t enjoyed a HOG game like this in a long time – and this reviewer plays his fair share of them on a weekly basis. True, the combat mechanic might not be for everyone, plus the game can get quite tough about half-way through the main game, but between its many gameplay elements, multiple modes and great production values (including an exceptional music soundtrack), you couldn’t find a better way to spend a few evenings.8.0 from Gamezebo

Valerie Porter and the Scarlet Scandal
Though every aspect of Valerie Porter’s gameplay is incredibly well-executed, it’s the story that will keep you playing. The writing and acting are both top notch, spinning out an intriguing mystery with twists and turns aplenty. You’ll keep clicking through level after level, just to find out what happens next. Hopefully we’ll see more from Valerie in the future.8.0 from Gamezebo

Natalie Brooks: Mystery at Hillcrest High
he full version of Natalie Brooks: Mystery at Hillcrest High sprawls over ten chapters, which should each take around thirty minutes to complete. The twists, turns, and complicated puzzle-solving make it a satisfying download for any player who is inclined to enjoy object hunting or Nancy Drew-style super-sleuthing. Be warned, though, that Mystery at Hillcrest High has absolutely no replay value. Solving the mystery is lots of fun, but once you’ve beaten it there’s no reason to play the game again. You’ll probably find yourself yearning for Natalie’s next adventure instead.8.0 from Gamezebo

Elementals: The Magic Key
Elementals: The Magic Key is a great little hidden object/puzzle/strategy game for kids, and just the sort of game that cash-strapped parents working through our troubled economy might want to consider instead of investing in pricey consoles and their $60 software.8.0 from Gamezebo

Treasures of the Serengeti
Beautifully crafted, both visually and in terms of the gameplay itself, Treasures of the Serengeti takes an unusual set of ideas and really runs with them. The game’s familiar puzzle concepts are blended in such a fresh and interesting way that it’s impossible not to get hooked once you start playing. Early levels ease you into learning how the game works, though things really get challenging and frantic as you progress deeper into the adventure. This keeps the gameplay from growing dull. What a pleasant surprise this one turned out to be. 8.0 from Gamezebo

Escape the Museum 2
Regardless of minor quibbles, Escape the Museum 2 is a fun and entertaining hidden object adventure, with attractive hand-drawn scenes, good pacing, and a pleasing story arc that actually has a satisfying ending (as opposed to one of those darn cliff-hangers). The game clocks in at perhaps five hours or so, so length is about average for a game of this type. Hidden object adventure fans can download this one with confidence.9.0 from Gamezebo

Pirate Princess
Word play puzzler from Moonpod (makers of Mr.Robot and Starscape)

Tales of Monkey Island — Chapter 5: Rise of the Pirate God
I think this is the best episode of the entire season. The writing is great, the conflicts are interesting, the jokes are funny and the payoff lives up to the promise. The only downside is that the puzzles are much too straightforward in the beginning so the game essentially solves itself as you move from one area to the next. Things get a little more complicated when LeChuck appears and you’ll find yourself grappling with a couple of large, multi-part puzzles. Though there’s no obvious cliffhanger, the material is set up nicely for a second season. Here’s hoping it’s even better than the first.8.3 from IGN

Update (21st November 2009)

2009 GAMES

Hidden Expedition: Devil’s Triangle
If there’s a criticism of Devil’s Triangle is that I wish there were more of it. Comparisons to Return to Ravenhearst don’t apply when it comes to length, because Devil’s Triangle is a much shorter game with fewer locations to keep track of at a time. Provided you take time to figure out all the puzzles instead of skipping them, you can expect a couple of evenings worth of gameplay. Granted, you can replay the game with some of the hidden objects in different spots. Devil’s Triangle ends with an abrupt cliffhanger ending, which sort of feels like you just bought half a game. However, if the next chapter is as good as this one it will be worth the wait.8.0 from Gamezebo

Hidden World of Art 2: Undercover Art Agent
Overall though, Hidden World of Art 2 is an excellent title that complex I-Spy and hidden object veterans and artists alike will adore. The gameplay is fun, it’s challenging, it’s involving, it’s long, and the sheer artistic nature and introduction of classic pieces to gamers is original, with execution being thoroughly well-done. Thumbs up to Meridian93.8.0 from Gamezebo

Din’s Curse
New indie hack and slash RPG from Soldak, makers of Depths of Peril (which got 82% from PCGamer UK, also won RPG Game of the Year 2007 on Gametunnel and was runner up for overall GOTY there)

Superleague Formula Game,
Racing sim from ISI (makers of rFactor and F1 Challenge 99-02), which brings the 2009 SLF season to the PC.

Tales of Monkey Island, Chapter 4: The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood
The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood is an attractive addition to the series, but the strength of it comes more from the way it advances the story and offers up a couple of groups of interesting puzzles. Not everyone will like the unexpected twists of the story but the bits about Elaine and Morgan are very appealing and add some much-needed weight. It’s true that the jokes aren’t as funny this time around but the puzzles are challenging without being frustrating, which should help you see this one through to a satisfying conclusion.7.2 from IGN

Star Trek D-A-C
Star Trek D-A-C definitely benefits from the inclusion of the single-player Survival mode. The multiplayer modes were all that were available when the game was first released on XBLA earlier this year, and the package feels more robust now. Also, whereas we previously couldn’t tweak game settings, we now can customize multiplayer matches. It’s very cool that the developers listened to feedback from the first release and actually improved the game. Originally this was something you could have a few hours of fun with. Now, we reckon you can extend those fun times to a few days.7.0 from IGN

An opportunity to plunder without consequence, to finally get the wealth you desire…and deserve, after all these years spent crawling through the shadows. But strange things occur the moment you set foot in Port Aerinth. It seems that not everyone – or everything – has fled the town. Maybe tonight, the darkness isn’t your friend…”

Update (29th October 2009)

2009 GAMES

Fallen Earth
Fallen Earth is not trying to emulate any other franchise. It capitalizes on the holocaust nightmare scenario that permeates popular culture, but the game itself is like nothing else on the market. The steep initial learning curve will filter out all but a certain type of player. Those who give the game a chance and can handle being completely in control of their character’s destiny will find a deeply nuanced and rewarding play experience that is unique among its competitors(…) This game isn’t for everyone, and that may be the most compelling reason to try it for yourself.8.1 from IGN

Avenue Flo
For people who don’t play many adventure games and might find themselves easily frustrated, Avenue Flo is a soft and painless (and polished, and fun) introduction to the genre. But if you already have a few adventure games under your belt then you might find this game a bit too easy, in spite of its considerable charm.8.0 from Gamezebo

Nancy Drew: Warnings at Waverly Academy
Warnings at Waverly Academy is a fine return to form for the Nancy Drew series. The previous game in the series, Ransom of the Seven Ships, was missing a certain sparkle that is back here. It’s definitely worth a trip back to high school for this game.8.0 from Gamezebo

Last Half of Darkness: Tomb of Zojir
Tomb of Zojir is very similar to its predecessors, continuing the themes of eerie locales, mostly solitary explorations with well-clued and fun puzzles, and not much has changed in terms of puzzle difficulty, graphics, and voice acting. The story this time around does seem relegated more to the secondary materials, and the gameplay is unlikely to dazzle you at many points, but it still manages to provide a solid experience for fans of first-person adventures and the Last Half of Darkness series in particular. And it comes with spiders! I’ll leave it up to you to decide if that’s a good thing.7.0 from Adventuregamers

Reincarnations: Awakening
Despite the drawbacks this is still a charming title with a wide variety of puzzles. The game may seem short to some due to the fact that hints are so readily available and puzzles may be skipped, but overall it’s a good length with a nice pace, and chances are you’d be getting your money’s worth out of this title.8.0 from Gamezebo

Captain Forever
Unique indie shooter that already won Best Game at GDC China’s IGF

This is done by using your mouse to drag objects away, demolish buildings, and even divert missiles headed towards the brain.-Indiegames

Update (19th October 2009)

2009 GAMES

Island Realms
Island Realms is definitely on the challenging side, with comparatively long and complex levels right from the beginning. Interestingly enough, the game is another example of the successful approach of the casual and the hardcore gaming market. The trial version should suffice to assure whether the game is to your taste or not, but especially those of you who already liked the old classic The Settlers will absolutely adore Island Realms.8.0 from Gamezebo

I’ve been working through many hidden object games lately so I have plenty of recent titles with which to compare this one, and Gardenscapes is easily one of my current favorites. I just wish it lasted a little longer.8.0 from Gamezebo

PuppetShow: Mystery of Joyville
PuppetShow: Mystery of Joyville is as masterfully constructed as one of its mechanical puppets, creating an atmosphere of dread and foreboding with just a few journal entries and cleverly staged scenes. Its dark tale is perfect for Halloween, and leaves the door wide open for a sequel that will hopefully be coming sooner rather than later. It’s a bit on the short side, unfortunately, but if you enjoy all things spooky and creepy, you’re sure to love every minute you spend in Joyville. 8.0 from Gamezebo

Campfire Legends: The Hookman
There is some good news for those who want more though: Campfire Legends: The Hookman is the first of an upcoming trilogy. With a stunning soundtrack, gorgeous artwork, handmade environments, and memorable gameplay, this is an outstanding title. The most amazing thing about this game? This is the very first hidden object title created and developed by GameHouse Studio Eindhoven (the Netherlands-based studio formerly known as Zylom). One can only hope there’s more where that came from, but prospects look promising.9.0 from Gamezebo

Romance of Rome
Romance of Rome is one of the most challenging hidden object games you’ll ever play, but not in a cheap or aggravating way. I wish there had been more strategy to gaining status – you simply buy every item in the store at the end of the chapter – but overall it’s still a fun and rewarding experience.8.0 from Gamezebo

Jojo’s Fashion Show World Tour
In a nutshell, Jojo’s Fashion Show World Tour is incredibly cool. It’s impossible to put down, with great production values and a completely engaging fashion theme. If you’re looking for a time management game with real fashion and lots of excitement, this is one game you shouldn’t miss. 8.0 from Gamezebo

Gridrunner Revolution
A number of things make Gridrunner Revolution stand out against the typical arcade shooter: the distinctive graphics and sound, bouncing off enemies to avoid dying, switching ship types, and the exaggerated use of sheep.(…)Gridrunner Revolution is actually pretty different from Gridrunner++ (I downloaded the demo), although it uses some of the same sound effects, and doesn’t suffer from sequel syndrome. The graphics and sound are trippy, and although they can negatively impact the gameplay, they do make for a distinctive look and feel. Fans of arcade shooters will find an approachable and unique game made so by several distinctive features.7.5 from OutofEight website

Grappling Hook
Indie first-person puzzler

New indie art game from makers of Path and Graveyard

NBA 2K10
With solid, fast paced gameplay and an excellent presentation that’s easily the best the series has ever had, NBA 2K10 continues its strong pedigree of great basketball. While the presentation holds down the fort, the inclusion of the NBA Today and My Player modes, as well as the addition of the developmental leagues make an already good title even better.7.9 from IGN

Return to Pacific Assault for Men of War
Pacific theatre based campaign

DarkMod for Doom 3
Amazing singleplayer stealth mod that successfully recreates Thief gameplay in modern engine.

Terraland for Neverwinter Nights
“Terraland is a high-end 3D roleplay adventure game using the highly acclaimed Neverwinter Nights engine that helps Informatics students develop strategic thinking and problem solving skills. It introduces conceptually difficult computing concepts, such as sorting, functions and recursion by presenting the student with interactive challenges and activities relative to the subject matter”

Norman Invasion for Rome: Total War with Barbarian Invasion add-on
” Norman Invasion starts in the year AD 1066. William, Duke of Normandy, has landed his troops at Pevensey bay and King Harold II of England has just arrived at Hastings, fresh from victory at Stamford Bridge, to hurl the Normans back into the English Channel. As the player you can choose to take up the Fighting Man banner of Harold and defend your shores against the Norman dogs, or you can – if you really feel the need! – take up the Papal Banner of William “le Batard” and put the English firmly under the Norman yoke. You can also play as one of the three minor factions – the Welsh, Norse or Scots. ”

Brotherhood of Shadow: Solomon’s Revenge for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Large singleplayer mod.

Addicsjon is another experimental project by the developer of G-E-N-E-R-I-C and FallOver, where you are in control of a drug addict who automatically tries to collect any pills he sees. Your objective is basically to guide him towards the white flag in each of the five levels included, although that can prove to be difficult as the protagonist doesn’t really feel like cooperating with the player at all.– Indiegames

Angry Gorilla Machine Monsters
Quirky little shump

Cave Chaos
A nifty little platform game from Nitrome

Evidence of Everything Exploding
Surreal action game where you navigate around press articles and everything you touch explodes to reveal new bits of information. It’s hard to explain, you simply have to play it yourself.

Graveyard Shift
Rail shooter from Nitrome

Hell Is Other People
Hell Is Other People is an ‘asynchronously multiplayer’ according to creator George Buckenham. The path that each player takes is recorded and future players are then pitted against their recordings. This means that no two games are the same. It also means you are technically playing against humans – albeit humans who aren’t actually aiming at you. It’s a beautiful idea which starts off pretty easy and soon develops into a full-on war. Try taking on 15 ghosts at the same time. Chaos.– Indiegames

In Another Château
Physics based puzzle platformer.

Miami Shark
Miami Shark is all about causing destruction by leaping out of the water and eating men, women, children, swans, boats, helicopters, planes and space shuttles (amongst other things).-Indiegames

Miner 2049er Again
Great remake of classic Manic Miner.

In RedRive you destroy enemies by drawing a rectangle around them, with the size of the shape that can be drawn determined by a gauge shown at the bottom of the screen. The smaller the rectangle used to take out enemy ships, the higher the score multiplier will be– Indiegames

Robin the Archer in Pixeland
Retro platformer

Spectro Destroyer
Action game based around ricocheting bullets

The Tickler
Arena-based action game

Cute little physic puzzler.

Legend of the Golden Mask
High quality hidden object game.

Magnello involves electricity and lots of magnets. The aim is to guide a magnetic ball through a series of challenging courses and into the electric hole at the end.– Indiegames

Alien Assault
Space-Hulk inspired turn-based tactical wargame that actually started as straight Space Hulk conversion, but was modified to avoid legal troubles with Games Workshop

Asylum 626
FMV horror adventure game

Endless Anesthesia
Spooky escape the room game.

Short, but surprisingly spooky horror adventure game

Submachine 6: The Edge
A new instalment in classic escape game series.

While the pilots soar high, the infantry grunts fall into dirt

Talk about mixed emotions.

The past few years have been really incredible for fans of simulation genre, a genre once all but extinct is now enjoying a resurgence in all it’s sub categories. I might get into it in a more detailed way later on (it’s too big and too glorious to fit as a side note in this rant), but for now let’s stick to recent news:

Members of Flight Simulator’s ACES team are back with a new studio

Microsoft closing down ACES studio was a huge blow for both sim gamers and pcgaming community as a whole. It marked the end of the longest running simulation franchise as well as the end of Microsoft as PC games publisher. Of course even with Flight Simulator being dead there was still X-Plane to play and the add-on for Flight Simulator kept on coming. Still, nobody can deny that future looked a bit grim. Not anymore though! Just like with other subgenres where new teams started to provide fans what they’ve been starving for, the same is now happening to civilian flight sim subgenre. First Aerosoft, one of the biggest developers of Flight Simulator add-ons has revealed that they are seriously investigating the development of a new simulator, directly aimed at replacing FSX and now ex ACES guys are back with new studio which of course is working on new simulators.
Rick Selby, who was a Creative Director at ACES wrote that ““If you love simulations, the news is going to get better and better” and I don’t think anyone can disagree with that statement.

Mad Otter Games has acquired all Red Baron 1-3 rights

The last couple months have been simply incredible for fans of WWI flight simulators. The last good game of this type (Red Baron 3D) was released in 1998 and for eleven years fans of this genre survived on this game alone, modding the hell out of it to create something that’s easily one of the most impressive cases of fans keeping the game and genre on life support all by themselves. And after eleven years came 2009, which first saw the release of Over Flander Fields Phase 3, a WWI add-on to Combat Flight Simulator 3 (the game is mediocre at best, but the add-on is so good it’s worth buying it just for it). It started as a mod, but phase 3 went commercial and delivered something truly spectacular. Then we saw the release of Rise of Flight, a great brand new WWI flight sim. After so many years fans could actually choose between new games from their beloved genre (although every fan of simulation genre, not just WWI ones should buy both of them anyway 🙂 ).
The good news just kept on coming though. First guys from Red Baron team at Dynamix got back together to form Mad Otter games and started to work on Ace of Aces, a WWI arcade sim for Instant Action’s browser gaming system. And recently the same company managed to acquire all rights to Red Baron franchise. This resulted in all three Red Baron games getting re-released on GoodOldGames and we can expect a new Red Baron game somewhere in the future too.
Eleven years of starvation followed by months of feasting and it looks like the chefs aren’t done yet, so unbuckle your belts guys 🙂
One thing I really like about ActivisionBlizzard as opposed to Sierra is that they’re willing to sell their old IPs, so we’ll be seeing the return of old beloved PC franchises in the future, something that was impossible with Sierra, which prefered to sit down on the IPs despite having no intention to actually use them.
Rights to Evil Genius, Ground Control and Empire Earth were purchased by Rebellion, GarageGames bought Tribes IP and now Mad Otter has Red Baron. Do I dare to hope Jane Jansen might be able to get Gabriel Knight rights back?

Of course as Rocky Balboa said the world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows, so we had to get this bombshell dropped on us:

No dedicated servers and mod support for Modern Warfare 2

P2P and no user modifications on servers essentially spell doom for any form of clan gaming or even more… for  any dedicated long lasting online community for PC version of Modern Warfare 2. I can’t really understand why would Infinity Ward do that. Especially since MW2 runs on updated MW code, so recreating the system from CoD4 wouldn’t be extremely easy, while introducing this P2P nightmare surely took a lot more time and effort.
So now not only do we PC gamers get no collector’s edition, but also we’ll be forced to suffer through laggy P2P, get over a much higher than normal game price, but they also expect us to accept small player limits, no mods, no clan gaming etc Is there any reason to switch from Call of Duty 4 to Modern Warfare 2? For PC gamers I don’t think there’s any to be honest and this will definitely cause a lot lower sales for PC version.

The less hardcore PC gamers might not care enough to stop themselves from buying the game, but they only bring the initial sale numbers. PC games tend to obtained their sale numbers in long term and CoD has been loosing more and more PC sales with each new entry. World at War already is far less popular than CoD2 is and with broken MP there’s little reason to buying MW2 aside from singleplayer and I fear to many gamers MW2’s singleplayer campaign will be only worth pirating, instead of purchasing
Previous CoD games reached their PC sales through years, by having huge and very active online community that lasted for a very long time, as it is now…MW2 looks like it will die out pretty soon. I just don’t see MW2 aproaching sale numbers previous Call of Duty games (at least those made by Infinity Ward) had on PC. What’s sad is that if this turns out to be true I can bet somebody from IW will come out and start to blame piracy for this.

Personally I’m not a big fan of CoD, I’m more of a tactical shooters person and the most fun I had with CoD4 was when Insurgency was down for few days and it’s community switched temporary to CoD4 on hardcore mode. I have my Insurgency and now Arma 2. I spice it up with NeoTokyo and American Army 3 and I’m waiting for Red Orchestra 2. But what will other non-tactical gamers do? Will you stick to CoD2, CoD4 and Counterstrike? Will you get into Battlefield Bad Company 2 instead of MW2?

Update (6th October 2009)

2009 GAMES

Paradise Beach
Paradise Beach is a must-have for building simulation fans who are longing for a real challenge, while it is probably a no-go for people who prefer less complex games where it is not absolutely vague what you have to do to proceed in the game. Besides and certainly of major importance is the fact that the game is not a simple copy of an already existing game, but rather unique enough to provide an alternative and interesting gaming experience.8.0 from Gamezebo

Widget TD
Overall, Widget TD is an amusing diversion. It has plenty of replay value (level editor, share custom levels with others via the interwebs, etc), and it’s reasonably challenging.7.0 from Gametunnel

Dawn of War II – Chaos Rising
First add-on (concentrating on armies of Chaos) to Dawn of War (9.0) from IGN

With Fire and Sword
A Mount and Blade spin-off RPG set in Poland during the 17th Century.

3 Cards to Dead Time
Sequel to an adventure game that scored 8.0 at Adventuregamers

That’s really what it comes down to in BumbleTales – the loveable, bulbous Bumbles themselves. BumbleTales’ gameplay isn’t significantly different from any other match-three game you’ve ever tried, but its cast of characters are so charming and endearing that you’ll simply enjoy having them around.8.0 from Gamezebo

Vampire Saga: Pandora’s Box
Vampire Saga: Pandora’s Box is among the few games where you think you know what’s going to happen before the game pitches you a very sharp twist, and one of the few that pulls off an ending that really leaves you speechless and wondering what’s going to happen next. Combine that with unique environments and suspense, and you’ve got your money’s worth.8.0 from Gamezebo

Zuma’s Revenge
Did you enjoy Zuma? Of course you did, and you’ll enjoy Zuma’s Revenge; just don’t expect a reinvention of the wheel. And if you haven’t played Zuma: welcome to our planet. Can I interest you in a fun match-three game?8.0 from IGN

Age of Oracles: Tara’s Journey
Age of Oracles: Tara’s Journey is a long, gorgeous, well-crafted adventure, with beautifully-constructed hidden object levels and creative puzzles. It can feel a bit repetitious at times, but it should please any hidden object fan.8.0 from Gamezebo

Gemini Lost
Gemini Lost can be dangerously addictive, though there isn’t much reason to return to it once you’ve completed the game. That said, there are scores of tasks to accomplish that truly make you feel like the hard work you’ll pour into keeping your townspeople alive and well is worth the effort. Ultimately, this is what will keep you coming back until the job is done.8.0 from Gamezebo

Kitchen Brigade
Kitchen Brigade has any faults, it’s that we’ve seen it all before. We’ve played kitchen management and clicking minigames. However, Kitchen Brigade manages to put them together into something genuinely fresh and fun. If you’re into time management, then step into the kitchen and get cooking!8.0 from Gamezebo

Zombie Driver
Car combat game from the team that made D.I.P.R.I.P mod for HL2

Tales of Monkey Island, Episode 3: Lair of the Leviathan
Telltale seems to have found the right mix of talent and franchise in Tales of Monkey Island. The characters and setting give the developers a chance to combine the broad humor of Sam and Max with the slightly more grounded feel of the Wallace and Gromit games. The jokes are funny, the puzzles are challenging and both arise out of the overall story, which is genuinely interesting. It might be a bit hard to pick up the odd episode here or there, so the season actually requires a bigger investment than the others, but it’s well worth i8.0 from IGN

Batman: Arkham Asylum
Batman: Arkham Asylum is the greatest comic book videogame of all time. This is an adult Dark Knight story that is well-told, packs some truly fun gameplay elements, has topnotch voice talent, and feel like it’s part of Batman canon.(…)Rocksteady nailed what Batman is supposed to feel like. Fans, rejoice. from IGN

Red Faction: Guerrilla
While the game may not do everything right, it’s your best bet for free-form demolition and unpretentious entertainment.8.0 from IGN

Tales of Monkey Island Chapter 2: The Siege of Spinner Cay
Telltale has another solid outing in this episode, and it’s cool to see the story start to come together. Plus, the next episode looks to have a completely cool and unexpected setting, so we’re looking forward to seeing where this all goes.7.9 from IGN

Pizza Morgana: Episode 1 – Monsters & Manipulations in the Magical Forest
Whilst a lack of polish lets it down occasionally, Pizza Morgana’s debut episode still manages to be a magical little adventure which shows great promise for this episodic series. 7.0 from Adventuregamers

Nancy Drew: Ransom of the Seven Ships
Like a working vacation without the sunburn, Ransom of the Seven Ships is a solid entry in the series thanks to a well-developed story with a wide variety of puzzles.7.0 from Adventuregamers

Drawn: The Painted Tower
Drawn may not be the toughest adventure-oriented game out there, but it’s absolutely loaded with style and personality. This goes a long way. Princess Isabella: A Witch’s Curse
Princess Isabella: A Witch’s Curse is a little strange (one of the items I had to find was a “twisted neck”) and seems to have something against snakes (the game considers them “evil”), but its healthy variety of well-crafted puzzles and hidden object searches make for a challenging and creative fairy tale.8.0 from Gamezebo

Bad Rats
Bad Rats is a good puzzle game. While the basics of the game have been done numerous times before, triggering events using contraptions and physics, the unique rat abilities and unnecessary feline violence make the game stand ou(…)Puzzle fans should certainly check out this title for a very small monetary investment.7.5 from Out of Eight website

Out of the Park Baseball 10
Out of the Park Baseball 10 is not the type of baseball experience that can be enjoyed by any fan of the sport. It takes a specific type of micromanager to enjoy what the forty-dollar download brings to the table, but if you can get your head around the complex menus and grandiose management duties you’ll find an extraordinarily deep baseball simulation running under the hood. There are flaws in the AI and core design, but hardcore baseball managers and fantasy freaks should be delighted with the many intricacies of Out of the Park Baseball 10.8.0 from IGN
