Update (14th January 2010)

A small clarification: when it comes to mods and freeware games today’s update covers only 2009. I will be adding separate pages for 2010 versions of those categories later this week.

2009 GAMES

Lord of the Rings Online: Siege of Mirkwood
Lord of the Rings Online: Siege of Mirkwood may have a smaller land mass than its last expansion, The Mines of Moria, but it does not lack in playable content. Turbine has managed to create an immersive introduction to this expansion with excellent use of graphics, music and quests(…)Turbine has managed to create Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings in the context of an MMO and yet kept true to the lore (even if the Runekeeper class is a bit of a stretch). There will be years left in the life of this game as Turbine takes the story onward toward Rohan and beyond.9.0 from IGN

Everyday Genius: SquareLogic
When the only downside a game can present is that it will almost definitely never be completed due to the vast amount of content (again, over 20,000 boards!), you know you have a real winner. Everyday Genius: Square Logic is a phenomenal game, turning the basic premise of Sudoku on its ear. It adds so many variables and dimensions to the point that it’s not even fair to call it Sudoku anymore. Everyday Genius: Square Logic is a serious candidate for best casual game I’ve personally played all year. By all means, if you’re not convinced, download the demo. Sixty minutes will never pass by so quickly.9.0 from Gamezebo

Penny Dreadfuls: Sweeney Todd
Penny Dreadfuls: Sweeney Todd is an incredibly polished adventure with beautiful visuals, well done hidden object sequences, and fiendishly clever puzzles. Get this one without delay. The Demon Barber awaits!9.0 from Gamezebo

Where’s Waldo?: The Fantastic Journey
Where’s Waldo: The Fantastic Journey excels in its fun gameplay, story, graphics, voice talent and humor. While it’s no easy feat to follow all the amazing HOGs this books series inspired, Ludia has done a fine job at taking on the daunting challenge.8.0 from Gamezebo

The Dark Hills of Cherai
The Dark Hills of Cherai is a perfect balance of the familiar and the new, sure to enchant even those who feel burned out on hidden object games8.0 from Gamezebo

Mishap: An Accidental Haunting
Mishap is delightfully inventive, but not without its frustrations. Its instructions aren’t always as clear as they could be, which can be particularly frustrating during the final encounter with the main ghost. Moving from the hub of a region to the satellite rooms is simply a matter of finding the doors, but they’re not always immediately obvious and it’s too easy to miss the small green arrow that gets you back to the hub room. Still, these are minor complaints in what is otherwise an entertaining, amusing, and refreshingly different hidden object game.8.0 from Gamezebo

REO Speedwagon: Find Your Own Way Home
Find Your Own Way Home’s pros outweigh its cons. It’s long, has a nice variety of game styles, including some creative twists on familiar mini-games. Despite being an advertisement for REO Speedwagon, it’s not obnoxious about getting you to buy the CD or even watch a video. If you like REO Speedwagon, great, but if not, you can ignore that aspect of the game pretty easily.8.0 from Gamezebo

Mahjong Memoirs
Mahjong Memoirs is a terrific game. It’s not perfect-why, for example, is there no onscreen clock if time plays such an important role in endless mode?-but any issues you’ll encounter will be small and infrequent. It’s a surefire bet for folks who enjoy a good game of Chinese solitaire.8.0 from Gamezebo

The Otherside: Realm of Eons
You’ll find few other hidden object games where the protagonists experience the time loops and sympathetic magic plots one rarely encounters outside of Neil Gaiman novels. The game unfolds more than 18 levels, some with multiple locations, that take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes to clear. The Otherside: Realm of Eons may feel a little too short for skilled hidden object gamers and it has absolutely no replay value. It’s not really a game that deserves an A for effort. It’s still an interesting and enjoyable enough experience that it merits a good solid B, though.8.0 from Gamezebo

  1. I’ve been meaning to post and echo what many others have undoubtedly said/thought:

You have done a terrific job of collecting & posting great games and screenshots to go with them.

I’ve discovered a lot of good games through your site. In fact, I first heard of Dragon Age here and saw the pics when they were using the NWN engine to prototype it.

Keep up the terrific work! 🙂
